Getting Started
Hinterflix is our family’s very own streaming platform - our private Netflix, filled with all my favorite movies, TV shows, and soon YouTube videos.
Request a new movie and we can have your favorites too 🎉
Hinterflix setup
Getting started is simple, you just need the right app or web browser on your device and your login details.
We are all assigned accounts based on our initials NotoriousKomodo. Starting password is your address (i.e. 123MainSt), please change it lol.
Step 1: Download the App
Google Play Store iOS App Store Download for Android Download for iPhone Step 2: Connect to the Server
Open the Jellyfin app you just installed.
When prompted to “Connect to Server”, you will need to enter https://hinterflix.com.
Log in with the username and password you were given.
Step 3: A Very Important First-Time Setting!
To make sure your streaming is smooth and doesn’t buffer, you need to set a streaming limit the first time you play something on each new device.
Why do this? Setting a limit ensures that one person watching in ultra-high definition doesn’t slow down the stream for everyone else. All the media is stored as 1080p files tbh 😇, but the files themselves vary in size and bitrate. Setting a limit tells my CPU to pick up some slack rather than sending all the data onto the network. Setting a limit additionally prevents your device from biting off more than it can chew as modern browsers just eat memory all day. It keeps it fast for you and everyone else.
Once you’re logged in, play any movie or show.
During playback, tap on the screen to bring up the on-screen menu. Look for the Settings (⚙) icon or the “Playback Settings” option.
Find the setting for video quality or streaming bitrate.
Please select a maximum streaming limit of
5 Mbps. This is the perfect balance between high quality and smooth playback for our server. The app should remember this setting for all future streams on that device.
Services & Security
Hinterflix is a Jellyfin server hosted on my home server with backups performed regularly. This means all our media is stored securely on a family server and streamed directly to your devices, anywhere we have an internet connection.
For security, we of course are using SSL/TLS encryption on the site. All traffic is also passed through a two-layer VPN directly on the server using a WireGuard client. Also all traffic is using EncryptDNS.

If you run into any trouble—like you can’t connect, forget your password, or a video won’t play—please don’t hesitate to ask me.
Happy Streaming!
